Nuno Da Costa is one of my new favourite illustrators in recent months because of his soft and romantic illustration style. This season, I have invited him to collaborate with me on the following Draw A Dot. WITH series.
I am always attracted to playing cards and love how different artists interpret the Jacks, Queens and Kings differently. For this mini project, I want Nuno to create 4 Queens based on his point of view and they are all dressed in the F/W 2015 collections. The first one is the Queen of Spades.
In here, the Queen of Spades is dressed in an outfit from the Comme des Garçons F/W 2015 collection. The model looks very vulnerable, but the outfit looks like an armour to me. I really love the contrast as it shows the mighty power and the romantic character of the Queen of the top trump – Spades.

Here are 2 questions I have for Nuno about this illustration.
Why choose this outfit for the Spade of Queen? What kind of qualities do you think this queen has?
Traditionally the Queen of Spades is inspired by Athena the Goddess of War. The symbol for the Suit of Spades in French and Latin is linked to the medieval weapons of war; Pikes and Swords. This background had me immediately dreaming of armour, blades, the Samurai and their protective cocooning clothing which lead me to think of the Comme des Garçons fall 2015.16 collection. Particularly look 3 from the show with its hard, contoured shapes and sharp edges. The perfect protective clothing, fit for a Queen.
In general, what do you think of this Comme des Garçons F/W 2015 collection?
Comme des Garçons collections are always challenging and they are quite jarring when you first see them. It always takes a few days to process what you have seen and how you feel about it and I really like that. There are always layers of thought that go into Rei‘s creations, there is a poetry to them and this collection was no different. Fall/Winter 2015.16 sucked you into this poetic, emotional dream land. I Loved it.
Stay tuned for part 2!
