I launched the Draw A Dot Instagram account at the end of August 2014, and it has been gaining a lot of buzz. The Instagram open call was shortly introduced to the community and it is now one of the staples of Draw A Dot!
As many of you know, the purpose of Draw A. Dot is to promote illustrators. If you are looking for ways to build your portfolio, I highly recommend you enter the open calls. A lot of illustrators have received different opportunities from brands after they entered the open calls!
We see you, and we are here to support you.
This is the time we need to unite together and support the Black community. The Draw A Dot community is very good at using artwork to show love and support so I am urging you to create illustrations to spread the message.
For this project, there are no restrictions on your drawings. They don’t need to be fashion illustrations. Our goal here is to unite the community together and to support the Black community. Here are 2 suggested ideas:
- If you are a Black artist, please create an illustration that expresses how you feel and what we need to understand. If you have a story to tell, please express it in the drawing as well. We are here to listen.
- If you are an ally to the Black community, please create a drawing to celebrate the Black community. If you plan to stick to fashion illustration, perhaps you can illustrate an outfit that is created by a Black fashion designer (such as Kerby Jean-Raymond of Pyer Moss, Laquan Smith of Cushnie). Or you can illustrate a Black model and celebrate their success in the fashion world.
P.S. If you are selling illustrations online (or you are not an illustrator but want to support the Black community), please consider donating a portion of your proceeds to organizations that support the Black community. Here is a list of organizations you can donate to:
Black Lives Matter,
The NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund,
The Equal Justice Initiative,
The Marsha P. Johnson Institute
*These are suggestions only. Please do some research and make sure they are aligned with your values before donating.
Deadline and Publication:
There is no deadline for this project. This project will last until the world is back on its track!
Please send your illustration to firstname.lastname@example.org (less than 5MB please and in JPG form) so I can upload it to Draw A Dot’s Facebook page. I will add the illustration to the gallery within 24 hours when I receive your piece.
I will have a Pinterest board dedicated to this project and will pin the illustration when I see people posting the illustration with the #DrawADotTogether. I will also have an IG story highlight tab on the IG stories I repost. Your story must tag @drawadot and have #DrawADotTogether so I know it is for this project. I will repost as many stories as I can.
– You are encouraged to show your work in progress on social media platforms. All work in progress images should also be tagged #DrawADotTogether, and @drawadot.
– By entering this open call, you agree to let Draw A Dot to post your work on our social media platforms.
Share this project with your friends so they can also participate. And if you are working for a brand or have connections to brands, please share this project with them too!
Draw A Dot community, let’s create a movement together! The time is NOW!
Many of the illustrators in the Draw A Dot community have created different beautiful coloring pages. I have asked each of them to contribute one of their pages and put them on Google Drive (include illustrators’ Instagram handles, and colouring pages, both print out and digital version). You can visit the following link to download the files.
If you have any questions regarding importing the png file to Procreate, you can visit Sew Sketchy’s Instagram for the instructions (one of the IG story highlight tabs).
Once you are done with the colouring, you can post them on Instagram (or Instagram story) and tag the illustrator(s). There is a good chance they will repost your art work!
I will continue updating the folder when I receive more colouring pages from different illustrators!
You can visit Draw A Dot. Facebook Page to see the submissions from past open calls.
